Zola (Taylour Paige), a waitress from Detroit, befriends Stefani (Riley Keough). Who convinces her to go to Florida dances and weekend parties. What at first looks like a glamorous ‘houism’ journey quickly turns into a 48-hour journey through an anonymous pimp, a crazy friend, a few Tampa mobsters and other unexpected adventures in this wild and fictional adventure. The story is based on a series of viral and catchy tweets.
One night in Detroit, Aziah “Zola” Wells is back where it all started: Hooters. Dressed in a pink blouse and skinny jeans, the 20-year-old beauty slipped her black heels across the hostess’ hut as a bartender yelled, “Zola! It was her first return visit since she quit her job as a carer shortly after learning that she and her fiancé were pregnant three months ago, but it didn’t matter.
A week ago, on October 27, Zola said, “Okay, listen. This story is long. That’s why I met this white bitch at Hooters.” Then it was an epic 148 tweets story about her heartbreaking trip to Florida and ” white bitch Jessica; Jarrett, Jessica’s nerdy friend; and Jessica “Z”‘s ruthless Nigerian pimp.
“Zola” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020. Described as “disrespectful and humiliating journey” by Variety’s Peter Debruge, the film opened the festival with laughter and applause. At the gala, Bravo said he was “instantly obsessed” with the Twitter threads sent in a group of text messages he followed with friends in Los Angeles. I felt the blood coursing through my veins and I wanted it. And I thought only a black girl could experience it, process it and throw it away.
The story begins when Zola meets stripper Jessica at Hooters. The couple changed numbers and Jessica immediately invited Zola on a trip to Florida to earn some money. Although her previous striptease trips had made fortunes, Zola soon realized that Jessica’s invitation was too good to be true. Combine prostitution, suicide attempts, murder arrests and a host of unexpected guests. And you have what it takes to be the next scammer or the next spring break vacationer.
While some may view the Florida crime Twitter series as an odd choice for a movie. Harris recognized its cinematic potential early on. The most interesting thing about what A’ziah tweeted was that everyone reading this Twitter thread had their own movie in mind. Black Twitter said it was ‘The Thotyssey’. And compare Aziah to Homer. Our first epic poems.
