After a planned pipeline ruptures the small town of Beaverfield and a snowstorm strands residents at a local hostel, newly arrived FINN rangers (Sam Richardson) and postwoman CECILY (Milana Vayntrub) must try to keep the peace. Discover the truth behind a mysterious creature that terrifies society.
The spirit of Mr. Rogers (or lack thereof) runs deep in ‘Scare Me’, the upbeat but popular second feature that gives Josh Rubens’ flashy tone a touch of attention with an introductory quote attributed to ‘TV icon’: ‘Don’t listen’ to love. Listen to yourself, then listen to our neighbors: ‘Sure, that’s a good feeling, but ‘The Werewolf Inside’ makes you wonder if such an enduring symbol of grace and humility would have others familiar if it was. Trump or something and he’s left behind.
Most of the issues with Werewolves Within stem from the film’s ambiguous storyline. From the beginning of the film, the script moves quickly to differentiate the film’s small cast in several ways. This is done to speed up the dialogue in the Whodunnit episode of the film. As each character takes advantage of the differences from the other to try and frame them for any trouble in the city.
But with a running time of 97 minutes, the film doesn’t spend enough time describing the characters. As the film reaches its climax, each character looks more and more like a cartoon. Making the film tiresome and uninteresting even at the most interesting and unexpected moments.
With astute screenwriter Mishna Wolff, Ruben builds a welcoming and soothing world. With crackling fireplaces and wood-laden interiors lit by golden lanterns. Where a group of frightened Beaverfield residents and drinkers must wait for a snowstorm to set in. And dodge mysterious creatures with razor blades that sever the limbs of your roommates in the dark. As it turns out, there’s no exact number for this crowd as it gets increasingly intimidating to disturb each other in public.
A comedian, actor and living storyteller, Wolff wrote his bestselling and acclaimed memoir. A story of his childhood as a white man in a poor black neighborhood in a blended family with a struggling identity. He is an NPR contributor and a 2015 graduate of Sundance Writers Lab and Episodic Lab. Richardson is featured in the upcoming Paramount/Skydance movie The Tomorrow War, starring Chris Pratt.
In theaters this month, Ubisoft’s next film Inside Werewolves looks set to capture the same feelings of insecurity and deception. Only to show the eccentric inhabitants of Beaverton rather than the medieval town of Gallowston. When caught in a severe snowstorm, the sleeping locals are soon at the mercy of bloodthirsty werewolves. Like virtual reality games, these monstrous creatures can blend in with the crowd. Meaning anyone can turn into a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
