Frankie (Maya Hawke) is an aimless young woman living in West Hollywood. Though he dropped out of school to pursue his artistic dream, he works diligently as a bartender with his friend Jake (Nat Wolff) and has no clear picture of his goals other than a battered YouTube channel.
One day she meets Link (Andrew Garfield), an eccentric young man who works as a mascot in a shopping center. While filming his surroundings, Frankie recorded Link’s rambunctious but passionate monologue, which quickly became his most popular video. Frankie later meets Link and befriends Link.
The ‘mainstream’ may have seemed overwhelming a few years ago but now. Especially given recent election interventions and brutal changes in socio-political discourse. The idea that social media can do the most damage is exploiting the insecurity of vulnerable people.
The glorification of cheering over individuals or sometimes mentally unstable loners seems a bit old-fashioned. To be fair to Coppola, he eagerly accepted the paradox of this temporary confrontation.
Coppola was open about her debt to Elia Kazan’s 1957 classic “A Face in the Crowd,” which featured Andy Griffith’s iconic and painful performance as Lonesome Rhodes, a homeless Caroline turned demagogue. In a playful and open way, Kazan’s films explore the parasitic ties between celebrities, the media and American politics.
This does not necessarily have to be indicated because registration is allowed. However, a similar fate seems unlikely for the “mainstream” the camera launched in 2019. Which has already felt overwhelmed, especially since YouTube has previously targeted it at more relevant rivals like TikTok and Twitch.
The hollow sound of the nickname is characteristic of Garfield’s success and Coppola’s cinema. He plays Jake Paul in Jared Leto’s Joker; Record screen animations that mimic Snapchat filters and emojis floating on the screen during an Instagram Live session.
In short, it’s too much, and the film adds more than half of it by pulling the creative trio into a love triangle. And as Link the Manic Pixie turns Fuckboy into a more realistic Frankie character. It’s one of the most interesting angles in the movie, but the real awe on Hawke’s face when Garfield yells at us that we’re all so addicted to our phones. It is possible to live gentlemen, this is just confusing.
The film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in September 2020 and not all reviews were positive about the film. But this warning from Coppola, who showed promise with Palo Alto, seems to stem from the controversy he provoked.
Outside of Venice, critic Nicholas Barber warns that Andrew Garfield’s performance as Link easily makes him one of the most boring movie characters of all time; a catchy quote that makes a humorous slant in this latest trailer.
