Veteran comedian Charlie Burnz (Billy Crystal) forges an unconventional yet fun and heartwarming friendship with New York singer Emma Payge (Tiffany Haddish) in the new Here Today parody. Having lunch with a comic legend, though she doesn’t know who she is, the impossible winner Emma had a rough start with Charlie think shellfish allergies, hospital visits, and paddock epidemic.
Soon, each finds some kind of soul mate in the other and weaves a deep bond between them. That bridges the generation gap and redefines the meaning of friendship, love and trust.
The scene appears to be based on an actual event in Dwo’s life. But the way it quickly unfolds here suggests that thinness won’t be the hallmark of the film. After an allergy attack, Emma not only suffers from bloating and breathing difficulties.
Instead, his face is instantly distorted and his attempts at funny speech resemble those of Bill Cosby doing the classic “dentist” routine. Crystal’s irresistible urge to laugh gives this film a decidedly schizophrenic character.
Here Today is more of a friendship novel than a romance. And as such has the advantage of putting two charming and naturally charismatic stars in each other’s orbit for no other reason than turning the cameras. Good enough for me, Haddish and Crystal do most of the usual movie pairings without the bedroom variations.
They have a fun reunion where Haddish, not realizing who Crystal is, opens a Wikipedia page on every white old man’s face to find them in a restaurant – a classic case of white male face blindness. Her character Emma Payge stays in the hospital (long story) and Charlie Berns (Crystal) pays the bill.
He dislikes jokes that he finds too banal and dislikes the awkward emphasis on certain words by a newcomer named Roger (Matthew Broussard). But Charlie’s sketches, some of which belong to Darrell (Andrew Durand). A young Harvard Lampoon graduate whom he raised under his care, are as gruesome as he hates them.
The biggest achievement was the distraction of the broadcast that turned into a random viral moment. And it’s impossible to say what we think about it. Crystal may be concerned that she no longer has the girl. But Here Today’s biggest fear has more to do with her insecurity about today’s comic book world.
Crystal has mostly avoided the pitfalls of movies about friends of different races. Emma was not a magical black and Charlie was not a white savior. They are not there to teach each other important life lessons or to help each other overcome obstacles. They’re just people who get along well.
The harmonious chemistry between the characters reflects the true friendship between the two stars. And it’s clear that Haddish and Crystal are having fun together, as are Emma and Charlie. Of course, they are so kicked that Crystal is so reluctant to edit directorial scenes, which breaks the rhythm.
